Many commercial paving companies self-perform several of these scopes, so confirm what each company actually performs rather than subcontracts.

Who provides asphalt paving and parking lot striping together?

Some paving companies self-perform striping, while others subcontract it to a striping specialist. Both arrangements are common and neither is inherently better, but it changes who is accountable for the finished layout. In some states the two scopes fall under different license classifications, which is another reason to ask directly. If striping matters to your project, confirm whether it is included in the paving proposal and who is performing it.

What should I verify before hiring an asphalt paving contractor?

Confirm the contractor's license and insurance, ask how the base will be prepared and compacted, get material thickness in writing, and clarify what the warranty covers and what would void it.

What is the difference between asphalt paving, overlay, and repair?

Paving refers to new construction or full replacement, an overlay adds a new layer over a structurally sound existing surface, and repair addresses localized failures like potholes or cracking without redoing the whole surface.

Should a paving proposal include thickness and base preparation?

Yes. A proposal that only lists a total price without specifying asphalt thickness and base preparation method makes it difficult to compare bids or hold the contractor to a measurable standard.

Why do asphalt paving bids vary so much?

Bids often differ in material thickness, base preparation scope, milling and removal, striping and ADA elements, and warranty terms — not just labor cost. Compare scope line by line rather than the total price alone.

Can asphalt paving fix a drainage problem?

Sometimes. Minor drainage issues can often be improved with grading or paving transitions. More significant ponding, low spots, or grading problems usually need a drainage and sitework contractor in addition to the paving work.

Can a paving contractor guarantee ADA compliance?

A paving contractor can install asphalt or grading work related to an accessible parking area, but ADA compliance also depends on striping, signage, slopes, and access routes. Consult a CASp inspector or accessibility consultant when compliance is material.
