This work often rides along with striping or paving, and frequently should. Specification decisions worth making before you order

Almost every complaint about this hardware traces back to a specification decision nobody made deliberately. The item was ordered as "wheel stops" or "bollards" and the contractor picked what they stock.

The single most common regret is anchoring choice. A stop or bollard anchored into asphalt with short spikes will work loose under repeated contact, and re-anchoring in the same holes rarely holds. Where the hardware will take real impact, ask for the anchoring detail rather than accepting the price.

Accessibility hardware is not optional

Accessible parking stalls generally require signage at a specified mounting height, and van-accessible stalls require additional designation. Requirements vary by jurisdiction and by when the lot was built or last altered, and a striping contractor restriping a lot to its old layout will faithfully reproduce a non-compliant one.

If the lot is being restriped, resurfaced, or reconfigured, that is the moment to confirm the accessible parking layout and its signage rather than after a complaint arrives. Planning for snow country

On any property that gets plowed, surface-mounted hardware and plow blades are in direct conflict, and the hardware loses. Wheel stops get caught and dragged, delineators shear off, and the replacement cost recurs every winter until somebody plans around it.

The usual answers are recessing, choosing rubber over concrete, marking hardware locations for the plow operator, or accepting removable installations that come out before the season. None is free, and picking one deliberately at install is much cheaper than discovering the problem in February.

Are wheel stops required in a parking lot?

Generally not as a blanket rule, though local codes and site plans often require them in specific places — at the head of stalls facing a walkway, a building, or a drop. They are also commonly used to protect landscaping and to stop overhang into a pedestrian route. Check your local requirements rather than assuming either way.

Concrete or rubber wheel stops?

Concrete costs less up front and is very durable until something hits it hard, at which point it cracks and is heavy to replace. Recycled rubber costs more, survives impact and plow contact better, weighs far less to handle, and does not spall. On a plowed property or a lot with high turnover, rubber usually wins on total cost; on a low-traffic lot in a mild climate, concrete is hard to beat on price.

What is the difference between a speed bump and a speed hump?

A speed bump is short and abrupt and brings traffic close to a stop — appropriate in parking aisles and near building entrances. A speed hump is longer and gentler and slows traffic to a moderate speed without stopping it — appropriate on through-lanes and private roads. Installing a bump where a hump belongs is the most common mistake, and it generates complaints and bottoming-out damage.

Do bollards actually stop a vehicle?

Only if they were built to. A structural bollard is a steel pipe set in a concrete footing, sometimes filled with concrete itself, and it will stop a vehicle at parking-lot speeds. A decorative sleeve over a short post is a visual marker. If the purpose is protecting a storefront, a fuel dispenser, or a utility meter, specify the footing depth and pipe size rather than the appearance.
