Sport court contractors build and maintain the playing surfaces for outdoor courts. Depending on the project, that can include grading and base preparation, installing an asphalt or concrete slab, repairing cracks and low spots, applying acrylic resurfacer and color coating systems, striping the lines for one or more sports, and installing net posts, footings, fencing, and windscreens.
Not every contractor does every part of this. Some are full-service court builders who handle everything from excavation to final lines. Others specialize only in resurfacing and coating existing courts, and rely on a paving or concrete contractor to install the base. When you request bids, confirm which scope each contractor is actually quoting so you are comparing the same work.
"Sport court" covers several very different surface systems. The most common outdoor surface is an acrylic hard court over asphalt or concrete, but cushioned acrylic, modular plastic tile, and post-tensioned concrete systems are all used depending on budget, climate, and how the court will be played.

Property owners often use "resurface" broadly, but contractors separate court work into distinct scopes. New construction means building the court from the ground up — excavation, base, slab or asphalt, coating, and lines. Resurfacing means cleaning an existing sound court, patching minor imperfections, and applying new resurfacer, color coats, and lines to restore the playing surface and appearance.
Repair addresses specific problems — filling cracks, leveling birdbaths (low spots that hold water), or fixing drainage — and is often done before a resurfacing so the new coating goes over a sound surface. Resurfacing a court that has structural cracking or a failing base will look good briefly but will not stop the underlying problem; the cracks typically telegraph back through the new coating. Have a contractor assess the base honestly before you pay to recolor a failing court.
The single biggest decision on a new court is the base. Asphalt is less expensive and faster to install, but asphalt courts will develop cracks over their life that need ongoing maintenance. Post-tensioned concrete costs more upfront but is specifically engineered to resist the cracking that plagues asphalt courts, which is why serious clubs and long-horizon owners often choose it.

Many owners now want a single court lined for more than one sport, or want to add pickleball lines to an existing tennis court. This is common and workable, but it requires careful layout so the lines do not confuse players, and it should follow recognized dimension standards for each sport. Ask how the contractor handles multiple line colors, blended lines, and whether they are adding permanent lines or a temporary option.
Converting one tennis court into multiple pickleball courts, or overlaying pickleball on a tennis court, changes net positions and playing areas. Confirm the exact layout on paper before work begins, including net post locations, because moving posts later means new footings and concrete work.
Be cautious of a bid that quotes a color coat over a cracked or ponding court without addressing the base first, promises that resurfacing will "fix" structural cracks permanently, or gives no detail on how many coats of resurfacer and color are included. Slope and drainage are frequently glossed over — a court that holds water will wear unevenly and play poorly, so a proposal that never mentions it deserves questions.
Also watch for vague line-striping scope on multi-sport courts, no mention of cure or cool-down time before coating, and warranty language that excludes cracking entirely without explaining what is and isn't covered. A price far below other bids usually reflects skipped surface prep, fewer coats, or a thinner base — ask what the difference buys.
