Both spread an aggregate-and-emulsion mix, but micro surfacing uses a polymer-modified emulsion and a chemically controlled break, so it sets by chemical reaction rather than by evaporation. That means a much faster return to traffic and the ability to place it thick enough to fill ruts. It costs more per square foot.
Can micro surfacing fix wheel ruts?
It can fill ruts caused by surface wear and shoving, and a rut-fill course is a standard part of the treatment. It cannot fix ruts caused by a failing base or subgrade — those return quickly, because the cause is underneath. A contractor should investigate the cause before proposing a rut fill.
How quickly can traffic return after micro surfacing?
Faster than slurry seal, often within hours, which is the main reason it is chosen for busy roadways and lots that cannot close. The exact figure depends on mix design, temperature, and humidity, so ask for a commitment specific to your job.
