Chip Seal Contractors in California

Use this page to find contractors who apply chip seal, also called a seal coat in roadway work. A binder is sprayed onto the pavement, aggregate is spread into it, and rollers embed the stone. It is usually the least expensive way to put a new wearing surface on a large area. This page lists chip seal contractors serving California, organized by city below.

Business Info Reviewed

Pavement Coatings Company is a specialty pavement-preservation contractor based in Santa Paula, California. Rather than concentrating primarily on new asphalt installation, the company provides treatments designed to protect existing pavement, correct surface deterioration, and postpone more expensive reconstruction. It serves municipalities, transportation agencies, general contractors, commercial property owners, and private communities throughout California and other parts of the western United States. The company holds California contractor license No. 303609 and has been a Ventura County Contractors Association member since 1993. The company’s services include conventional slurry seal, recycled-asphalt slurry seal, fiber-reinforced slurry, micro surfacing, chip seals, cape seals, fog seals, tack-coat applications, asphalt interlayers, paving fabric installation, crack sealing, and other specialized emulsion treatments. Depending on the condition of the pavement, these applications can help seal minor surface defects, slow oxidation and weather-related damage, improve skid resistance, reduce water intrusion, and extend the service life of streets, parking areas, and private roads. Pavement Coatings Company also operates oil-distributor equipment for applying tack coats, prime coats, specialty fog seals, sand seals, scrub seals, dust-control products, and curing materials for stabilized bases. Pavement Coatings Company became part of the Pavement Recycling Systems organization in 2007 and now handles the pavement-preservation work performed under PRS Holdings. The combined organization is 100% employee-owned, allowing Pavement Coatings Company to pair its surface-treatment experience with the milling, pavement recycling, soil stabilization, reclaimed-material, and general engineering capabilities available through Pavement Recycling Systems. This relationship makes it possible to address pavement at multiple stages of its life cycle, from preventive surface maintenance to more extensive rehabilitation. Its Santa Paula operation provides slurry seals, chip seals, fog seals, tack coats, paving-fabric installation, and roller-compacted concrete services. Additional branches expand the company’s coverage and provide access to treatments such as micro surfacing, asphalt-rubber chip seals, rejuvenating chip seals, recycled-asphalt slurry, stress-absorbing membrane interlayers, and specialty airport surface treatments. The company has experience completing both large municipal programs and projects requiring unusually careful application methods, including extensive roadway slurry-seal programs and hand-applied work in environmentally sensitive or weight-restricted locations.

Chip Seal FAQs

Is chip seal a good choice for a commercial parking lot?

Usually not for a customer-facing lot. The texture is coarse, loose stone is likely at first, and it does not stripe as cleanly as a smoother surface. Chip seal earns its place on private roads, rural roads, industrial yards, and long driveways, where covering a large area affordably matters more than finish quality.

How long does loose stone last after chip seal?

Some loose aggregate is normal at first. A sweeping pass after the surface takes traffic removes most of it, and a fog seal helps lock the remaining stone down. Ask whether sweeping is included — when it is skipped, loose stone becomes the lasting complaint about an otherwise sound job.

How does chip seal compare with slurry seal on cost and finish?

Chip seal is typically the cheaper of the two per square foot and the coarser of the two in finish. Slurry seal gives a smoother, more uniform surface that suits parking lots and stripes better. Local material and haul costs move the comparison, so get both quoted if the property could accept either.
