Asphalt Repair and Pothole Repair Contractors in Dover, Delaware

Find asphalt repair contractors serving Dover, Delaware. The companies listed here handle pothole repair, patching, and pavement failures on commercial parking lots, apartment and HOA properties, private roads and driveways — surface patching, sawcut and full-depth repair, dig-outs of failed base, edge repair, and repairs staged ahead of sealcoating or resurfacing.

Pothole repair is the most common reason a property calls an asphalt contractor, and it is worth understanding that a pothole is a symptom. The hole is where water got into the base and traffic broke the weakened surface. Filling the hole treats the visible part; whether the repair lasts depends on whether the water path was addressed and how much of the failed material was removed.

The Pavement Directory does not rank, endorse, or vet the contractors listed here. Confirm licensing with the relevant Delaware and Kent County authorities for the work in question, along with insurance and comparable project experience, before you sign.

Coverage in this city is still building, and most repair crews work Kent County and beyond rather than a city limit. If none of the companies below fits the property, widen the search through the Delaware asphalt repair directory or the Dover contractor directory, which lists every published contractor here across all pavement services.

Three levels of pothole repair, and how long each lasts

Not every pothole repair is the same job, and the cheapest option is sometimes the right one. What matters is knowing which you are buying.

  • Throw-and-go patching. Cold patch material shovelled into the hole and compacted. Fast, inexpensive, and temporary — a stopgap for winter or for pavement already scheduled for replacement.
  • Surface patching. The failed surface is cut back to sound pavement, cleaned, tacked, and filled with hot mix. Appropriate where the base underneath is still sound.
  • Full-depth repair or dig-out. The pavement and failed base are removed, the subgrade is examined and recompacted, and the area is rebuilt in lifts. The most expensive option and the only one that addresses a base failure.

A pothole that keeps returning in the same spot after patching is telling you the base or the drainage is the problem, not the surface. That is a full-depth repair or a drainage correction, and continuing to patch it is the more expensive path taken slowly.

What to confirm on an asphalt repair proposal

Repair proposals vary more than almost any other pavement scope, because the same square footage can mean three very different amounts of work.

  1. Repair depth, and whether the base is being removed or left in place
  2. Whether edges are sawcut square or the patch is feathered into existing pavement
  3. Square footage of each repair area, listed separately rather than lumped
  4. Whether the failed area is being cut back to sound pavement beyond the visible damage
  5. Tack coat between the existing pavement and the new material
  6. Compaction method and the number of lifts on deeper repairs
  7. Whether standing water or a drainage issue at the repair location is being addressed
  8. Cure time before the area takes traffic
  9. Whether striping in the repaired area is being restored

Asphalt Repair in Dover: common questions

Why do potholes keep coming back in the same place?

Because the repair addressed the hole rather than the cause. A pothole forms where water reaches the base, weakens it, and traffic breaks the unsupported surface. If the patch is placed over that same weakened base, or the water path is unchanged, the failure repeats. Recurring potholes in one location usually call for full-depth repair or a drainage correction.

Is cold patch a real repair?

It is a real temporary repair and has a legitimate place: keeping a hazard out of a drive lane in winter, or holding pavement together that is already scheduled for resurfacing. It is not a durable fix, and pricing it against a hot-mix patch is comparing two different products. Ask any proposal to state which material is being used.

When is asphalt repair not worth doing?

When failures cover a large enough share of the lot that patching approaches the cost of resurfacing. At that point repeated repairs buy time at a poor rate, and an overlay or reconstruction is the better spend. A contractor should be willing to say when a lot has reached that point, and a condition assessment is the way to settle it.

How soon can a repaired area take traffic?

It varies with material, depth, and weather, so ask for the specific number rather than assuming. Hot-mix patches generally need to cool and set before traffic, and deeper repairs placed in lifts take longer. Any proposal should state the reopen time and how the area will be closed off until then.
