New Mexico Paving & Pavement Contractors

Concrete that deteriorates from the bottom up is the New Mexico problem owners least expect. Gypsum and other sulfate-bearing soils are common across parts of the state, and where they are present they can attack ordinary concrete over time — softening pads, aprons, and curb from the ground side while the surface still looks acceptable. It is a soil chemistry question rather than a workmanship one, and a soil test before the pour costs a small fraction of a replacement.

What makes pavement work different in New Mexico?

New Mexico combines sulfate soils that attack concrete, collapsible alluvium, arroyo-driven flooding, and a federal stormwater permit that does not come from the state.

  • New Mexico is not authorized to administer the federal NPDES program, so construction stormwater permit coverage comes from EPA rather than from the New Mexico Environment Department.
  • Gypsum and sulfate-bearing soils occur in parts of the state and can attack ordinary concrete, which makes soil testing before specifying a concrete mix a worthwhile step rather than an optional one.
  • New Mexico licenses contractors through the Construction Industries Division, licenses are issued in classifications, and the classification matters as much as the number.
  • Collapsible alluvial soils in parts of the Rio Grande corridor can settle abruptly when wetted under load, producing sudden depressions unrelated to traffic.
  • Monsoon rainfall arrives concentrated in arroyos rather than spread across the ground, so a site's flood exposure often originates well upstream of it.
