In the desert Southwest, extreme sun and heat — not water — do most of the damage. Relentless UV bakes the binder out of asphalt, turning it gray and brittle, and large day-to-night temperature swings drive thermal cracking. Rain is rare but arrives as intense bursts that overwhelm drainage, so pavement here needs strong UV protection and surfaces built for heat.

Hot days and cool nights expand and contract the pavement daily. That constant movement fatigues the surface and opens cracks even where there is little traffic.
Infrequent but intense monsoon rain can flood poorly graded lots quickly, and blown dust and sand accumulate in cracks and drainage paths, accelerating wear.
