Prime Milling

Family-owned, Prime Milling specialises in asphalt milling and removal for commercial properties across the whole of Colorado. Rather than offering paving alongside a list of other trades, it concentrates on one part of the pavement cycle: taking the old surface off. Owner Andrew Cortese is involved directly in jobs, overseeing work from start to completion.

Rotomilling is the core service. The company explains the process plainly — a large rotating drum grinds away the existing asphalt, at depths ranging from two or three inches up to complete removal, bringing the surface back to a specified grade and cross slope. Done properly this leaves a base that an overlay can be laid on smoothly, with minor fine grading, which is why milling is often chosen as a cheaper route than demolishing and rebuilding a pavement outright. The technique dates from the mid-1970s, and modern machines carry enough automation to hold a precise depth, grade and cross slope.

Beyond full-surface planing, the company carries out mill patching on localised areas, trench cutting, and sweeping of asphalt and concrete once the milling is finished. Recycling the old asphalt is handled as part of the work, so material coming off a site does not simply become waste. Instead it is used as a filler in making new asphalt or in creation of base rock.
