How to Compare Paving Bids
Updated May 1, 2026
Paving bids that look similar in price can differ significantly in scope. Comparing bids line by line, rather than by total price, is the most reliable way to make an informed decision.
Normalize scope before comparing price
Request that each bidder itemize base preparation, material thickness, square footage, striping, and any excluded work. If one bid is missing detail, ask for clarification before comparing it to a more detailed proposal.
Watch for excluded scope items
A lower bid may exclude milling, drainage correction, or ADA striping that a competing bid includes. Confirm what happens if excluded work turns out to be necessary once the project begins.
Compare material specifications directly
Two bids listing 'asphalt paving' may specify different thickness, base depth, or compaction standards. Ask each contractor to confirm these specifications in writing so they can be compared directly.
Evaluate warranty terms as part of the price
A bid with a stronger warranty may represent better value even at a higher price. Read warranty terms carefully, including what maintenance is required to keep the warranty valid.
Frequently asked questions
Should I always choose the mid-priced bid?
Not automatically. Use bid comparison to understand what each price includes, then choose the contractor whose scope, experience, and terms best match your project, regardless of where the price falls.
